My condolences to the Underwood family,
Mr. Dan Underwood had my deepest respect. I appreciated his concern and kindness to the students and faculty of PSMS. It was a privilege to work for him during his last nine years as principal.

Mr. Underwood was respected by all the students at PSJH, myself included. He was a kindhearted man with a commanding presence.

Dan was one of the sweetest men I've ever known, and always kind to co-workers, parents, and students alike. I spent many hours at Pt.South Jr. High and enjoyed working with him as PTA Vice President and as a parent volunteer. One of my favorite memories is of him reading his Cajun version of The Night Before Christmas. He was a good man who will be greatly missed!

I am saddened by the news of Mr. Underwood's passing. I am proud to be a former student of Pointe South Junior High School, and Mr. Underwood's leadership was a large part of what made that school great. My thoughts are with you, his family.

Dear Virginia and family,
Our deepest sympathy on your loss. Dan was the best boss I've ever had and that I even considered a friend. He taught me so much about my profession at the most critical time- the beginning. Although there were times when I was asked to come to his office and I felt that I should be taking everything out of my back pockets :-), I always left knowing I had at least one friend and mentor. No student or parent would ever speak disrespectfully to me in his presence and his encouragement and trust sustained me all through my career into high school and ultimately college. I will miss him always but I'm the better for having known him. God bless you and thanks for sharing him with us.

Dan gave me true LOVE and understanding, to the point you, of junior high students. I am forever in his debt. May he rest in peace.

It was my honor and privilege to work for and know Dan Underwood. He was a mentor both professionally and personally. As a young teacher who had moved to Georgia away from my family, there were many times he took on the role of father; I was so very grateful for those times he listened and gave such valuable advice. As a teacher he gave me confidence and provided professional opportunities that allowed me to be accomplished in areas I never dreamed. He was The Wind Beneath My Wings as he was for so many others he mentored. Thank you, Underwood family, for sharing him and allowing him to touch so many lives.

Mr. Underwood cared about people: his faculty, students, and parents. He was simply one of the best men I have ever known or met in my life. He was a mentor, friend, and father figure to me. He taught me many things that I have carried with me throughout my life, the most important was to treat everyone fair and equal. Although I have not seen him in a couple of years, I think of him in someway almost everyday. Mr. Underwood, you will be missed by so many, but you will never be forgotten.

Life Stories

Mr. Underwood was such a competitor. I was a 22 year old coach and we were playing our rival and his old school, Riverdale, for the first time. He called all of us coaches into his office and told us to "roll" Pointe South and make it look like the Riverdale people did it so as to fire up our football team and unify the community. It worked!!!
The next day he played it up in a big way and our football team played the game of their lives.
What a great man!!!!

I was having a personal problem one day that was affecting my teaching. Mr. Underwood called me in to his office and said "I'm going to talk to you like I'd talk to my own kids" and proceeded to give me very good fatherly advice about how to deal with the problem. I, of course, balled my eyes out while he "lectured" me, but he always had the tissues handy. I will never forget that moment when he went from being my boss to being the dad I needed that day.
